News from the WS Braunschweig of a new production of Der Fliegende Holländer
The new season at the Staatstheater Braunschweig began with an exciting new view of the "Flying Dutchman" by opera director Isabel Ostermann
The director deals above all with the motif of the young Senta's emotional loyalty until death of the old Dutchman, who has been unable to die. The staging in the realistic stage setting of a sea captain's dwelling offers material for discussion and cause for reflection on Wagner's intentions in connection with the "woman of the future", from whom he hoped for salvation for a world caught up in materialism.

The Wagner-Verband Braunschweig would also like to encourage further reflection and is therefore offering three public events in co-operation with the Staatstheater as an accompanying programme. During a members' visit to the opera on 20 December, we will discuss the performance with some of the artists. This will include a lecture by Professor Susanne Vill from Vienna, who has often published on the subject of Wagner's female figures and his philosophy of the feminine in the human. She will be a guest at the Staatstheater on 20 January at our invitation.

The WS will also present a lieder recital on 27 January with Mirella Hagen, the colourful forest bird from Frank Castorf's Bayreuth "Ring", who will sing songs by Wagner and his contemporaries from the time when the "Dutchman" was composed in Paris under the title "Wagner in Paris".  This will take place in the Spohr Hall.
