The Swan of Bayreuth, Photography Exhibition
The Richard Wagner Society Portugal has produced a photography exhibition, "The Swan of Bayreuth", at the National Music Museum, Lisbon, featuring vintage photographs and memorabilia of every production of "Lohengrin" at the Festspielhaus since its first performance there in 1894.

Curated by Prof. Dr. Ing. Jorge Calado (who began to collect Bayreuth Festival photographs as a high-school student in the 1950s, when the greatest Bayreuth singers sang at the São Carlos Opera House in Lisbon), the exhibition features over 140 items, from vintage photographs of Ernest van Dyck and Lillian Nordica (who sang Lohengrin and Elsa at the Festspielhaus in 1894) and a copy of the programme (and ticket) for a performance in 1908 to an assortment of pictures from the last production in 2010 with Jonas Kaufmann and Annette Dasch.

A fully illustrated catalogue of 120 pages, listing the casts for every single production and revival is available for consultation. The exhibition – which opened on July 19 and will be on display until October 27, 2018 – was organized to celebrate the live transmission via satellite of the opening of the Bayreuth Festival 2018 to the Belém Cultural Centre Concert Hall – the first time that a Bayreuth Festival performance was shown live in Portugal.
