Vampire opera! Screening of Der fliegende Holländer, a 1964 ground-breaking feature film by Joachim Herz; introduction by Hilan Warshaw.

• Introduction by Hilan Warshaw, Founder and Producer/Director, Overtone Films, LLC. Presentation co-sponsored by DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a film archive from the former East Germany

About the Movie:
• A monster movie: The villagers’ encounter with the Dutchman’s crew (Act III) is a frightening piece of horror filmmaking. Senta’s first meeting with the Dutchman, with eerie lighting and visual details, explicitly recalls the defining classic of vampire cinema, F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922).

• The first complete Wagner opera produced as a feature film and one of the finest cinematic adaptations of an opera, directed by Joachim Herz (1924–2013). Herz visited New York for a WSNY screening in December 2000 and discussed the film and his philosophy. Separate acting and singing casts. Soundtrack in 4-track magnetic sound.

• See extended commentary by Hilan Warshaw, reprinted from Wagner Notes, June 2014, on the WSNY?website: http://www.wagnersocietyny.org/special-topics.
