WS London - Ken Ward on Bruckner and Wagner
6pm (Reception) for 7pm (Lecture) to 9pm

Tuesday 12th May 2020The title of my talk is “Bruckner under the Tarnhelm – a discussion of the extent and limits of Bruckner’s transformation under Wagner’s spell.”

The talk will present the known facts of the story of the extraordinary relationship between Wagner and Bruckner, and discuss three ‘Wagner’ symphonies,  No. 3, No. 7 and No. 8, with a view to exploring whether it is in any way helpful to regard Bruckner as a Wagnerian symphonist.

Ken Ward was editor of The Bruckner Journal for 12 years.  He is the recipient of the Bruckner Society of America ‘medal of honor’.  He has delivered papers on Bruckner at Hertford College, Oxford, in the context of the Bruckner Journal biennial Readers Conference, and has talked to the Gustav Mahler Society UK about Bruckner and Mahler.  He has written numerous concert  and CD reviews in various publications and websites. His enthusiasm for music is that of a layman, not a practising musician nor a musicologist.
